Healing And Rest
Ezekiel chapter 27 is a lament for Tyre. It begins by listing how regarded they were in sea trade and describes what nations were willing to trade for Tyre’s goods. Some of these wares included gold, lead, purple cloth, wrought iron, saddle blankets and more – much of the merchandise being items reserved for royalty and the wealthy. So it is interesting to read how Judah and Israel make the list:
“Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections, honey, olive oil and balm for your wares” Ezekial 27:17
There is a fascinating distinction between what Judah and Israel offer and what the other nations of the world offer. Honey, Olive Oil, Balm, Wheat. These things nourish. These things heal. Is it any wonder that these items came from the land flowing with milk and honey? God did not promise deep gold mines, vast iron ore, lumber or other goods. He promised Israel a land flowing with things that nourish and heal. And in this verse from Ezekiel we see that God fulfilled his promise.
What a good reminder of what God promises us. It can be so easy to get caught in the repetitions of life. And for pastor’s especially it can be easy to get caught in the hectic cycle of the life of the church – sometimes to the point that even when we know we need to step back, we see no opportunity to in our calendar.
God calls us to rest. He modeled it at the end of the week he created. He calls all who are weary and burdened to him for it. He provides it for those who seek it. And he longs to fill us with good things to nourish and satisfy our souls.
May God’s people, and especially those who shepherd them, find Him in rest. And may they be satisfied with good things from him.
