I have heard a lot of great ideas for pastors that I think are fantastic, and perfect for running yourself into the ground. Most, if not all are well intentioned:
Always be available to talk. Go visit people. Never be too proud to clean a toilet. Go the extra mile and pick up trash. Be prepared for Board Meetings. Figure one hour of study for each minute you plan to preach. Lead by example. Put your family first. Always make sure you give time to your spousal relationship. Give every effort to raise a good family. Take seriously the spiritual health of your congregation. Make time for relationships where you can have weekly spiritual accountability. Have relationships with fellow pastors. Have relationships with people outside of the church. Make sure you have a presence among other pastors in the community through ministerium and similar gatherings. Visit the sick in the hospital. Visit those in nursing homes. Make sure the building is up to date. Make sure the finances of the church are in good standing – indeed, above board. And on, and on and on.
What a pastor should do – never ends.
And what is missing from this list, is what matters most: make disciples.
I am calling myself The Lazy Pastor. Lazy, because I have come to a point of completely rejecting every expectation anyone wants to put on me. Lazy because I really do not care if my Sunday services happen anymore. Lazy because I do not really desire to have a church building for a congregation to worship in.
This blog will be devoted to fighting against the established norm that pastors are the busiest people and should be. No – they shouldn’t. They are killing themselves. They are killing the church. And I will no longer be part of it.
I look forward to sharing my ideas and I look forward to figuring out how I can become the best Lazy Pastor I can be!
